Marble Quarries and Sarzana

Meet with the guide and depart by bus for the excursion to the Carrara Marble Quarries. These amazing Quarries were exploited as early as the Romans. For the extraction of marble blocks, gunpowder was used from its spread to the 19th century. Numerous explosions created ravines or flows of debris, which from a distance look like snow. Tour of a quarry.

Departure by bus to Sarzana. Lunch in a restaurant. This medieval town was 1204 to 1929 seat of the diocese. The modern Via Mazzini was part of the Via Francigena, traveled by pilgrims. The beautiful cathedral Santa Maria Assunta, houses Italy’s oldest painted wooden cross by Mastro Guglielmo from 1138. In the center there is also the fortress known as the “Cittadella” built by Lorenzo De Medici in 1488. End of services.
