Carrara’s Marble Quarries Full Immersion Tour

Pick-up and drop off in La Spezia at 9.50 am.

The tour will begin aboard an elegant private Mercedes minivan that will reach the central marble basin of Carrara through the ancient tunnels where the steam-powered “La Marmifera” used to pass, with a short stop at the Ponti di Vara.

Once there, guests will board their private 4×4 jeep with their guide, who will take them on a short journey to an altitude of about 700m, where they can admire an open-air quarry and learn about the various extraction techniques, the machinery used, and the history of this precious material.

Weather permitting, guests will also enjoy a spectacular view of the valley and the coast.

After the outdoor tour, guests will return to the minivan and travel through an ancient tunnel to the heart of the mountain, which has been renamed the “Marble Cathedral,” where they will take a shared group tour to discover other interesting aspects of marble and its processing.

The last stop, again by minivan, will be the characteristic village of Colonnata for a typical lunch based on the famous Lardo and other local products such as mixed cold cuts, cheeses, vegetable pies, bread, and sgabei; a first course of tortelli or tagliatelle stordellate with ragù + wine, water, and coffee.
